Natalia was born on June 24, 1961 in Rostov-on-Don. She trained at Dynamo Rostov and was coached by Vladislav Rastorotsky (who also coached Ludmila Turischeva, Natalia Yurchenko and Albina Shishova). Shaposhnikova is perhaps best known as being the first female to perform giant swings on uneven bars. Her beam routine was also memorable, featuring a planche mount and one-arm twisting handstand, skills that are rarely performed today.

Natalia married Pavel Sut, a USSR national team member, on May 1, 1982. They have a daughter, Olga, and a son, Paul. The Suts live in New Jersey and own a gym school called Gymnastika.

Svetlana was a Soviet team member at the 1976 Olympics.
I saw her twice at the USSR Gymnastics Display at Wembley Arena, and she gave me her autograph (I was a young aspiring gymnast at the time, so it meant a lot to me). I was so impressed when I first saw her working across the beam, a great innovator and though Shaposhnikova developed on it, Grozdova was my favorite gymnast from then on.

Grozdova married E Makalichev, and she was still performing beam excercises as late as 1987.

To understand this concept let's use the example of a Spanish Bull Fight. The matador faces the bull in a ring. The matador stands fearless in the face of the bull's charge. He waits until the last possible second to side step into the bull.

If the matador steps too wide, the bull's thrashing horns will gore him. He must step within a void between head and body, where the bull can not reach. The Sabre Dance is a movement in the final act of Aram Khachaturian's ballet Gayane, completed in 1942. The Sabre Dance movement evokes a whirling war dance on a mazurka rhythm, where the dancers display their skill with sabres (swords).

Because of its exceptionally exciting rhythm, the Sabre Dance obtained a place in its own right in concert practice, leading also to various adaptations in popular music.

Plate spinners and other human tricks innovators highly contributed to its popularization, notably The Ed Sullivan Show, wherein it was played while plate spinners performed their act.

The Sabre Dance was also covered by performers such as jazz player Woody Herman and rock and roll musician Dave Edmunds.

The popular Sabre Dance from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Gayane, set on an Armenian collective farm, illustrates the Soviet composer’s colorful, accessible style.

The dance uses an ostinato, a repeating pattern in the strings and percussion heard at the beginning of this excerpt. The winds and xylophone enter after the ostinato is established, playing a percussive, driving melodic line. A later ballet, Spartacus (1956), includes a Sword Dance similar in style to the Sabre Dance.
